Timothy A. Powers

Tim Powers is Vice-Chairman of Summa Strategies. He offers clients a wide range of experience and expertise in the fields of business, communications, and public policy.

Mr. Powers has participated extensively in many aspects of the Canadian political process. He has served as an advisor to a national party leader and federal cabinet ministers, was an aboriginal affairs negotiator for the federal government, acted as a private consultant to groups involved in the Voisey’s Bay development, been an academic research fellow, and written extensively on the Innu of Davis Inlet, Labrador.

Mr. Powers has specific knowledge in aboriginal affairs, governance structures, natural resource policy, the construction industry, media and communications, education policy, and amateur sports marketing.

Originally from St. John’s, Newfoundland, Mr. Powers began his career as an assistant and advisor to the Honourable John C. Crosbie, then Minister of Fisheries and Oceans. Thereafter, he acted as advisor to the Minister of Indian Affairs and Northern Development. Mr. Powers also served as the Director of Policy and Research to the leader of the Progressive Conservative Party of Canada.

In 1994, Mr. Powers was appointed as the Canadian negotiator for program devolution to the Labrador Innu. In 1995, he also assumed the role of federal negotiator for financial arrangements concerning the Mi’kmaq Education Authority agreement. In 1996, Mr. Powers became a Graduate Research Fellow at the Gorsebrook Research Institute for Atlantic Canada Studies in Halifax.

Mr. Powers has a Bachelor of Arts degree from Memorial University of Newfoundland, a Master of Arts degree (Atlantic Canada Studies) from St. Mary’s University, and a Master of Sciences degree (Media and Communications) from the London School of Economics. Mr. Powers has also studied Public Sector Management at Harvard University.

Mr. Powers is also a media commentator, appearing frequently on CBC’s “Power and Politics” and Ottawa radio station, CFRA. He also does a twice weekly Ottawa report for VOCM in Newfoundland. As well, he writes for the Globe and Mail online and the Hill Times newspaper.
